Undercover Investigation Reveals Bad Botox Practices

botox training

An undercover investigation into non-surgical treatment practices by The Times has revealed that some doctors are still prescribing Botox without seeing patients.

The practice, known as remote prescribing, goes against GMC regulations and one doctor has been struck off for issuing hundreds of prescriptions for nurses to deliver for patients that he had not personally consulted.

Botox Guidelines

The lack of real legislation around Botox practices in the UK is an ongoing problem and one which has been highlighted repeatedly in the media and via various reports and studies.

There are recommendations for the industry to be ‘tightened up’ but at present, the key regulations for practitioners to be aware of are as follows:

  • Botox is a prescription only medicine
  • If prescribed by a doctor, then under GMC guidelines, that doctor must have carried out a face to face consultation
  • Nurses have similar requirements under NMC guidelines which prohibit remote prescribing
  • The guidelines apply to the person(s) giving the prescription but there is no requirement for practitioners (injectors) to have their clients seen before treatment
