“It seems like everywhere you go in the aesthetics market for botulinum toxin and dermal fillers at the moment, you can’t have avoid hearing the phrase ‘Level 7’.
“From our own perspective at SkinViva Training, we’ve noticed a big shift in the types of enquiries we’re getting whereby well over half of the calls and emails we receive are from medical professionals wanting to find out more about Level 7.”
So, first and foremost, what is Level 7?
“Level 7 refers to the ‘IQ Level 7 Certificate in Injectables for Aesthetic Medicine’.
“It’s a vocational qualification approved and regulated by OfQual aimed specifically at people who are working in aesthetics who want to gain a set standard of competencies in botulinum toxins and dermal fillers.
“Because it’s a vocational Level 7 and not an academic Level 7 (i.e. a postgraduate qualification), it focuses primarily on practical hands-on experience which is seen as the gold standard for practitioners wanting to build confidence in these treatments and assure their patients of their safety.
Where did Level 7 come from?
“Here’s a quick potted history…
“Wind things back to 2013 and we have Sir Bruce Keogh’s review of the regulation (or rather, lack of) of cosmetic interventions.
“Unfortunately, the government shied away from putting in place regulation into the sector but they did commission a review of the aesthetics market via Health Education England.
“You can read HEE’s reports part 1 and 2 here:
“A key recommendation of HEE was the introduction of an education and competency framework aligned to the different levels of learning. The HEE report covered various treatment modalities in the aesthetics sector including skin rejuvenation (peels etc), laser and light, skin needling, hair restoration and of course, botulinum toxins and dermal fillers. As a result, the various treatments were placed at various levels ranging from Level 4 to Level 7 according to the levels of skill and risk involved in administering them.
“Out of HEE then, the IQ Level 7 Certificate in Injectables for Aesthetic Medicine was born. It’s owned and administered by an OfQual awarding organisation (AO) called ‘Industry Qualifications’ and was designed in response to HEE’s recommendations and is therefore fully compliant with their findings.”
