In the latest on our series of articles on the new Level 7 Certificate in Injectables for Aesthetic Medicine, Business Development Director Lee Cottrill looks at the fundamental question of what exactly is ‘Level 7’.
Lee explains that to a certain extent, understanding of Level 7 Certificate in Injectables for Aesthetic Medicine is a matter of perspective – it depends on who you are, previous qualifications, current work and future career development plans.
“Level 7 means different things to different people.
“To some, it’s a postgraduate qualification (PgCert, PgDip, or Masters) at university.
“To some, it’s an accredited vocational qualification aimed at medical professionals working in their own aesthetics businesses.
“And to others, it’s a new opportunity for non-medical professionals to work above and beyond their current, typical levels of qualification to move into a new area of procedures (not without controversy I should add but that is not the subject of this article).
“For medical professionals starting or already running their own aesthetics practices, Level 7 usually refers to the ‘IQ Level 7 Certificate in Injectables for Aesthetic Medicine’1. IQ stands for ‘Industry Qualifications’ – an OfQual-accredited awarding organisation. It’s a vocational qualification approved and regulated by OfQual aimed specifically at people who are working in aesthetics who want to gain a set standard of competencies in botulinum toxins and dermal fillers. Because it’s a vocational Level 7 and not an academic Level 7 (i.e. a postgraduate qualification), it focuses heavily on practical hands-on experience which is seen as ideal for practitioners wanting to build confidence in these treatments and assure their patients of their safety.
“This is not to say that university courses out there don’t include practical hands-on experience. Indeed, the PgCert at Northumbria University (as an example) includes the recommended level of practical experience that’s recommended in the Health Education England (HEE) review of non-surgical cosmetic interventions (completed in 2016 and mandated by the Department of Health)”2
