Medicine, Aesthetics and Medical Aesthetics
For most medical professions, the training process is fairly clearcut. It involves several years of university study leading to a specialist degree qualification. This is usually followed by further training and supported by membership of a professional organisation. It’s a well-understood pathway for both medics and patients and is highly respected in terms of its rigour.
By comparison, in the aesthetics industry, there are still no regulations requiring training, accreditation or experience. It is up to the individual practitioner to ensure that they feel competent and up to the patient to make appropriate checks. Sadly, patients are often unaware of the lack of regulation in the aesthetics market and assume that there is more in place to protect them than there actually is. It is indeed a minefield and unfortunately that is why the likes of Facebook, Instagram and salon posters can still be seen promoting cheap treatments at bargain prices which are in some cases carried out by persons with no training, qualifications or even insurance.
Medical aesthetics is where the two come together. The principle here is that aesthetic treatments are carried out by people who have already gained a medical qualification before going into aesthetics. This means that they are able to build on their academic and practical knowledge of human physiology. Thanks to media reports on ‘unqualified’ practitioners and ‘treatments gone wrong’, clients are increasingly aware of the need to choose carefully. Where a practitioner already has medical qualifications, this is a huge advantage. While there is still no requirement to pursue specific training courses, those with medical knowledge seem to be more inclined to invest in developing their skills and knowledge. They understand the safety issues as well as cosmetic. In addition, evidence of aesthetic training is sometimes a requirement of their dispensing pharmacy or insurer.
So for medics looking to enter the field of aesthetics, what is the process?
Medical Aesthetics Training Process
As there are no regulations, there is no set process for training in aesthetics. Most delegates welcome the freedom to train at their own pace and build their own journey according to the types of treatments they wish to offer. Those with limited time alongside their main medical job may start by doing a weekend course. Others prefer to fully commit with a structured comprehensive programme ensuring that all the bases are covered. The choice is yours. Specialist training academies can advise on the best courses or programme for each individual.
Choosing the Best Aesthetics Training Courses
The best courses include face to face training with fellow medics. This means watching treatments and demonstrations from experts, then getting first hand practical experience under the watchful eye of experienced trainers. Good training providers will also include pre-course material to ensure that all delegates are up to speed on the essential anatomy before progressing to practical application.
